The Bucks County delegation and House Speaker Mike Turzai this week welcomed the 2015 PIAA Boys Class AA championship basketball team, the Conwell-Egan Eagles, to Harrisburg, where the team was recognized in the House chamber. The Eagles, coached by Frank Sciolla, captured the school's first ever state championship and the first boys basketball PIAA title in lower Bucks County since 1975, by defeating previously unbeaten Aliquippa 62-51 in March in Hershey.

Gov. Tom Corbett signs legislation that is helping to crack down on scrap metal thefts during a ceremony in the state Capitol. Act 79 requires scrap processors and recycling facilities to register with the state police, increase the credentials required for transactions involving restricted materials, such as railroad ties, and gives courts the authority to impound vehicles linked to scrap metal thefts. A yearlong effort to build awareness about the need to screen for Krabbe disease and other disorders paid dividends with Gov. Tom Corbett's signing into law of House Bill 1654. The effort was spurred in a large part by 1-year-old Hannah Ginion of Bristol Township. Hannah, daughter of Vicki Pizzullo and Justin Ginion, is among the innocents stricken with Krabbe disease, an inherited and often fatal disorder that targets infants. There’s something fishy going on at Levittown Lake and I was happy to help. The Grade 5 Eco Club from Bristol Township’s Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School were treated to a trout outing, as the state Fish and Boat Commission treated us to an educational program about the environment, trout and their ecosystem. I congratulate the Bristol Wardogs youth football teams after introducing them on the House floor. The teams had a year for the ages in 2013 as the Unlimited and Pee Wee teams claimed national titles in their divisions, while the Mitey Mites came in fifth in a 14-team bracket. I'm pleased to welcome Corey Smith of Bristol Township as an intern in my Levittown office. Corey, a student at Bucks County Community College's Bristol Campus, started on Jan. 6.

I welcomed the undefeated Neshaminy High School Girls’ Soccer Team and its coaching staff to the state Capitol, where they were honored in the House of Representatives for capturing their first state title in the 2013-14 PIAA Class AAA state championship game held in November at Hersheypark Stadium. En route to a state final, 2-1 overtime victory, the team posted 19 shutouts, won their second consecutive Suburban One National championship and the school’s first girls soccer District 1 crown. Brigadier General Andrew P. At a Capitol news conference, I speak on behalf of House Bill 1654, which would add Krabbe and five other Lysosomal Storage Disorders (Fabry, Pompe, Niemann-Pick, Gaucher and Hurler Syndrome) to the list of diseases newborns are screened with the heel prick test. Lysosomal Storage Disorders are inherited metabolism disorders caused by a deficiency of specific enzymes required for the breakdown of nutrients. I also am introducing a resolution to proclaim Jan. 15, 2014 as “Krabbe Disease Awareness Day.” Krabbe Disease is an inherited, often fatal disorder affecting the central nervous system.

I was truly honored to win second place in the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Snaps of Service photo contest, in which citizens were asked to submit a photo of their public service. I am donating my $500 winnings to the Bucks County Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national nonprofit organization that helps children realize their true potential by matching them with mentors. The winning photos will be on display at BPC's National Conversation on Public Service set for 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the National Constitution Center’s F.M. During a Capitol rally in May, I had the chance to speak to members of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE). This year marks the 10th anniversary of legislation that allows motorcyclists the choice of whether to wear a helmet while riding.

The state Capitol was rockin’ with a visit from Drummers with Attitude, a diverse group of drummers and dancers, including students from Bristol Township middle and high schools.
