Cephas welcomes food service funding for Philadelphia schools

HARRISBURG, Feb. 23 – State Rep. Morgan B. Cephas, D-Phila., announced that grant funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Education has been awarded to improve food safety and provide students at local schools with nutritious meals.

“All children should have access to nutritious food to help them learn and grow,” Cephas said. “This funding will aid in our ongoing effort to enhance schools and have well-functioning equipment and fully equipped cafeterias to help them better feed hungry students and staff every day.”

Two schools in Philadelphia were awarded a total of $42,000 in state funds, one in Cephas’ 192nd District. Harambee Institute of Science and Technology Charter School was awarded $24,175 for a walk-in freezer.

“I’m grateful for these much-needed funds that will improve the great work of schools that I proudly support. It is rewarding to know that these grants will impact the success of our students,” she said.

The grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grants are used by schools that participate in the National School Lunch program to buy or upgrade equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves and dishwashers.
