Burns to host two crime watch seminars to help neighborhoods fight crime

EBENSBURG, July 17 – State Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria/Somerset, is hosting two Crime Watch Seminars at the end of July for area neighborhoods interested in creating a crime watch.

"Fighting crime is very important to me, as I was the victim of a violent crime when I was a teen," Burns said. "My perpetrators were caught, but the scars of that experience serve to remind me of how important it is to keep our streets safe. A neighborhood watch is a relatively easy thing to do and it's one of the most effective ways to make communities safer.

"If you are interested in learning what you can do to create a crime watch in your neighborhood, I urge you to attend one of these seminars," Burns said.

The first seminar will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 in the Portage fire hall, 721 Main St., Portage. The second will be held a day later at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31 in the Lower Yoder Volunteer Fire Co. Activity Building, 515 Fairfield Ave., Johnstown.

Area residents may attend whichever event suits their schedule and location.

Burns said an expert in helping communities organize crime watches will talk about setting up neighborhood watch programs, and the Portage and West Hill police departments, respectively, will be on hand to offer advice and answer questions.
