Burns announces 2014 House Scholarship Program; deadline is March 1

HARRISBURG, Jan. 8 – State Rep. Frank Burns said students may now apply for the Pennsylvania House Scholarship Program.

The program provides four-year scholarships to two high school seniors each year. Each scholarship consists of the value of one semester of tuition at a State System of Higher Education school, automatically renewable for up to four years, provided the recipient maintains his or her eligibility. Although the value is based on a SSHE school, the scholarship may be used at any Pennsylvania college.

"I invite all high school seniors to apply for this scholarship," Burns said. "With the cost of higher education continuing to increase, every little bit of assistance helps, and this scholarship could make a difference."

To be eligible, a graduating high school senior must:

  • Be a legal resident of Pennsylvania;
  • Attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school as a full-time student;
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school grade-point average;
  • Be committed to their community and have leadership qualities;
  • Participate in extracurricular activities; and
  • Have financial need.

More information and the application for this program are available online at www.tfec.org. In addition to the application, students must also submit other scholarship information, their resume, community and leadership skills, FAFSA Student Aid Report, a personal essay, three personal reference letters, their official transcript, a guidance counselor form and a $10 processing fee.

All of these materials must be received by March 1 by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities PA House of Representatives Scholarship, Attn: Allison Moesta, Program Associate for Educational Enhancement, 200 N. Third St., 8th Floor, P.O. Box 678, Harrisburg, PA 17108-0678.

Created by members of the Pennsylvania House, this scholarship is funded by private donations, including gifts from former and current House members. No tax dollars are used, and children of House members or their staff are not eligible.
