Burns seeks candidate for Valley Forge Military College scholarship

HARRISBURG, April 8 – State Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria/Somerset, is seeking a worthy student from the 72nd Legislative District to participate in the Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative.

For the 2013-14 academic year, a student seeking admission to the initiative must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 or a 21 on the ACT, and an overall high school grade-point average of 2.5. Candidates should also exhibit involvement in sports or other extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership potential and be service oriented.

The college offers an Army ROTC Early Commissioning Program, as well as a transfer program to top-tier, four-year colleges and universities throughout the country.

All students who meet the academic requirements are eligible for this appointment, not just those pursuing a career in the Armed Forces.

Burns said applications can be completed online at www.vfmac.edu or picked up in one of his constituent service offices. Completed applications should be dropped off at or mailed to one of Burns' offices: 535 Fairfield Ave., Johnstown, PA 15906, or 119 S. Center St., Ebensburg, PA  15931.

The deadline to submit completed applications to one of Burns' offices for 2013-14 is Sept. 1. The deadline for 2014-15 applications is Feb. 15.

Each legislative appointee will receive a $12,000 annual scholarship to attend the military college. The scholarships will be funded by Valley Forge Military College; state funds will not be used for the program. Burns said the school will also assist in facilitating other financial aid options.

Founded in 1928, Valley Forge is a co-educational, two-year transfer college located in Wayne, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia.
