Burns: $1.5 million available for digital literacy skills programs

State funding to help job seekers, increase access to employment opportunities

EBENSBURG, Oct. 27 – State Rep. Frank Burns is urging local workforce development boards, public libraries and nonprofits to apply for a $1.5 million state workforce development program that will provide grants up to $45,000 to promote digital skills.

“There’s no getting around that people looking for work these days need basic computer skills, whether it’s to search for a job opening, or to fill out a resume,” said Burns, D-Cambria. “These grants will help local organizations teach those skills to the folks who need them, so they can get back to work and back on their feet.”

Examples of digital skills include the ability to search and apply for online jobs, upload and submit a résumé via email, and the ability to develop and maintain a professional profile on networking sites.

Additional details and the grant application can be found on the Department of Labor and Industry’s website. A bidders’ conference is scheduled for Nov. 1, and the deadline to apply is Dec. 21.
