Grant program to expand fruit, vegetable offerings in schools
Rep. Frank Burns August 4, 2021 | 3:23 PM
EBENSBURG, Aug. 4 – Investing in our children and education isn’t just about books and pencils – healthy diets are a part of the equation as well. Today state Rep. Frank Burns announced that Pennsylvania is sending more than $160,000 to local schools to expand healthy food choices.
“Studies show that students with healthier diets are better able to concentrate and retain information and that they perform better academically, particularly in subjects like math and reading.” Burns said. “This program is vital in providing students with better food choices and leading them toward a healthier lifestyle as they head into adulthood.”
Funding awarded today for Cambria County schools:
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program began in Pennsylvania in 2004 and is now in every state. Fifty percent or more of a schools’ student population must be eligible for free or reduced meals for the school to qualify for these grants.
Since taking office, Burns has helped bring home more than $63 million in state and federal funding to area schools for everything from healthy lunches to technology and safety equipment to workforce development programs – all part of his commitment to making sure Cambria County families and children have the opportunity to succeed.
