Burns calls on Wolf to sign senior tax rebate legislation

Bill would automatically send property tax/rent rebates to seniors

HARRISBURG, May 15 – Today state Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria, called on Gov. Tom Wolf to swiftly sign into law a bill that would automatically send annual property tax/rent rebates to seniors in Pennsylvania.

“Many of our seniors rely on this highly popular program to help them out, and this bill would ensure that seniors would get their money at a time when they really need it,” Burns said. “This bill had bipartisan support and I’m calling on the governor to sign it into law. The sooner he does so, the sooner our seniors will start getting the money they deserve.”

House Bill 1076 which passed unanimously, would direct the departments of Revenue and Treasury to process 2019 rebate payments for all homeowners and renters who received a 2018 rebate and to issue those payments automatically. For anyone who became eligible in the past year, rebates would be issued immediately upon receipt of their application instead of waiting until July 1.

The bill also would authorize school districts to set up programs in which senior citizens could volunteer in their school district and receive a partial credit against their school property tax in exchange for their services.
