BRIGHTON HEIGHTS, Oct. 10 – Helping transform a vacant property into a community asset, a new state grant of $229,000 will fund the installation of 1.5 acres of trees and meadows at the former St. John’s Hospital site, state Rep. Emily Kinkead announced today.
“This grant is a big milestone for a property that has sat unused for decades,” said Kinkead. “Since my first day in office, addressing blighted and abandoned properties has been a major priority for me. I’m very excited to see this space transform into something that will benefit everyone in our neighborhood.”
In addition to the new greenery, the grant awarded to the Allegheny Land Trust will also fund landowner outreach and engagement, watershed forestry plantings and post-planting establishment, project signs, and other related site improvements.
This project builds upon the Allegheny Land Trust’s ongoing efforts to convert the former St. John’s Hospital site into a multi-use recreation area that includes natural stormwater management systems.
The grant is funded by the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Community Conservation Partnerships Program, which allocates funding for projects related to parks, recreation, and conservation.
