Keeping Money in our Senior Citizens’ Pockets
|
Senior citizens who give up their driver’s license for medical reasons receive a free state photo ID. We should not charge them to renew that ID.
That’s why I am proud to partner with Rep. Lindsay Powell on legislation that would remove this unnecessary financial burden on older Pennsylvanians. This week, we formally introduced the bill as H.B. 2304, and you can learn more about it here.

Standing Up for Family and Medical Leave
|
This week, I joined several of my colleagues, including Rep. Powell, to show support for the Family Care Act – bipartisan legislation she is prime sponsoring to create a statewide paid family and medical leave insurance program.
Millions of Pennsylvanians lack access to paid family and medical leave. No one should be forced to suffer through ill health or see their family struggle just to keep the lights on. I am proud to support the Family Care Act as it moves forward in the House.

New Grants to the District
|
This week, I am proud to welcome $65,000 in new grant funding to our community.
|
Temple Ohav Shalom in McCandless will receive $25,000 to invest in security measures for the facility. I am proud to advocate for our Jewish community and ensure that our neighbors of all faiths can safely worship in peace.
|
La Roche University will also receive $40,000 to fund sexual assault education through It’s On Us PA. We must ensure that all students are able to learn and live in a safe environment, and this state funding will help the community at La Roche do so.

Fish Fry Season is Here – and Other District Updates
|
Fish fry season is here in our community, and my staff member Reid and I had a great dinner at the fish fry held by Saint Luke the Evangelist Parish in Franklin Park. I wish the Christian community of the North Hills a blessed Lenten season.
Many non-profits, churches, fire halls and small businesses across our region take part in fish fry season. You can find nearly 300 local locations here.
|
I attended the Pennsylvania Autism Resources Roundtable with colleagues of mine to learn more about autism services in our region and how we in the legislature can better support these vital programs and services.
|
It was a pleasure to join the McCandless-Franklin Park Ambulance Authority for their year in review reception to learn more about their important work over the past year and how we in the legislature can better support their service to our community.
I was also honored to join Rep. Jeremy Shaffer and staff members of Sens. Devlin Robinson and Lindsey Williams in presenting a U.S. flag that flew over the State Capitol to Chief Chris Dell.
|
I was honored to participate in a graduate level class on health policy at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School. Thanks to CMU for the kind invitation and the opportunity to discuss my experience as a physician-legislator.

Recognizing the Success of our Local Students

From swimming to robotics, several of our local students had major successes this week.

At the PIAA Championships, Avonworth had several gold medal performances.

Sam and his relay team also won two silver medals in the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Free Relay. Other members of that team included Grey McKelvey, Nate Parker and Jakob Vranick.
Sam was also a member of the 2026 Boys WPIAL Champs team of Cavanaugh, McKelvey, Parker, Vranick, and Liam Joyce. Sam won four golds there.

From Hampton, Gabriella Elk won gold for 1 Meter Diving, and Lainey Sheets was named Swimmer of the Meet after winning gold in the 100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 200 Medley Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay.

Finally, the boys’ team from North Allegheny defended their state championship title, with the girl’s team placing second.
|
North Allegheny’s Marshall Middle School team also took first place at the PA VEX Robotics Championship. This marks the fifth time in nine years the team will qualify for Worlds, being held this year in St. Louis.
|
Seventy students from North Allegheny travelled to Hershey to take part in the annual PENN Health Occupations Students of America Conference. Among the awards at this event included a first-place victory in the Public Service Announcement category by Ella Huang, Muriel Liu, and Lynsey Zhao.
|
Four eighth-graders from North Allegheny – Kristen Liu, Mary Grace Lison, Raina Shin, and Zachary Wang, had the opportunity to perform at the PMEA District 1 Orchestra Festival.
Congratulations to all our local students on so many incredible accomplishments!

The Departments of Transportation and Military and Veterans Affairs are celebrating Women’s History Month by reminding drivers that purchasing a women veterans’ license plate supports programs assisting the more than 62,000 women veterans living in Pennsylvania.
Four different women veteran recognition plates are available. Details on those and all other veteran plates can be found here.
|
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs announced that its mobile veterans outreach team is available free of charge throughout the state to assist veterans. The team helps veterans obtain information and start benefit claim paperwork with the support of accredited veterans service officers.

Governor’s Survey for Women in Pennsylvania
|
The Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women has launched a new digital survey to gather input from women across Pennsylvania. This survey is part of the Shapiro Administration’s upcoming State of the Woman Report, a comprehensive, data-driven effort to assess the status of women throughout the state.
The survey, which can be found here, will be open through May 30 and will collect insight from Pennsylvania women on their experiences and priorities to better inform the Administration’s policies that impact women. The survey is also available in Spanish and Chinese.
There will also be a statewide listening tour to further engage with the women of Pennsylvania, including a stop in Pittsburgh on May 14.
