WEST MIFFLIN, June 7 – State Rep. Nick Pisciottano today organized a meeting of local officials and state government leaders with Shawl Pryor, chief operating officer of Moonbeam Capital Investments, which owns the Century III Mall, to discuss the future of the property.
"Since first taking office, I have been working with mall ownership, local officials, and county and state economic development leaders on a number of initiatives to redevelop the Century III Mall property," said Pisciottano, D-Allegheny. "While there is still a long way to go, I'm encouraged by the progress made so far. Today's meeting was focused on how we can move forward together to revitalize this area. By coordinating with all levels of government and the property owner, I know we can achieve a win-win solution that benefits everyone in our community."
Pisciottano said in addition to Shawl, meeting attendees included elected officials from West Mifflin Borough Council and West Mifflin Mayor Chris Kelly; state Sen. Jim Brewster and Rep. Matthew Gergely, both D-Allegheny; County Councilman Bob Macey; and representatives from the offices of Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, and the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
"West Mifflin Borough has tried a number of different ways to help move forward with the mall site, but there is only so much a single municipality like ours can do on our own," said West Mifflin Councilman John Inglis. "Today's meeting with the property ownership, the state, and the county helped reset the conversation and keep the momentum we have going in the right direction."
"The Century III Mall site is uniquely positioned along major roads, close to the Allegheny County Airport, and will be easily accessible from the expanded Mon-Fayette Expressway which makes it a prime destination for our region," said Macey.
"As we focus our efforts on communities in the Mon Valley and South Hills of Allegheny County, redevelopment of properties like Century III Mall will spur economic growth and revitalization for West Mifflin and surrounding communities," said Brewster. "I'm excited by the possibilities here and encouraged by today's meeting that we are headed down the right path."
Pisciottano said he plans to continue to coordinate regular discussions between the group as demolition and redevelopment at the Century III Mall site continues.
