Space Launch, Autism Acceptance Month & See You Monday!

This week, I had the opportunity to join residents in Elkins Park to watch the historic launch of Artemis II, the first crewed lunar mission in more than 50 years.

Moments like this remind us that innovation and discovery are not just happening far away; they are being celebrated right here in our community. It was inspiring to see families, students, and neighbors come together around a shared sense of curiosity and possibility.

As we look toward the future of space exploration, it is just as important to invest in the next generation here at home. Encouraging young people to explore science, technology, and new ideas will help ensure they are part of shaping what comes next.

High Note

I was excited to join Hector Ybe, founder of Elkins Park Skywatchers and owner of Elkins Nutrition, along with community members for a watch party of the Artemis II launch.

Thanks to Hector’s leadership, this event was recognized as part of NASA’s Night Sky Network, bringing national attention to a local gathering right here in our district. The event brought together residents of all ages to witness a major milestone in space exploration.

It was especially meaningful to see young people engaged and excited, reminding us of the importance of creating opportunities that inspire curiosity and learning.

Thank you to Hector and the Elkins Park Skywatchers for hosting such a memorable event and bringing our community together.

Autism Acceptance Month

Autism Acceptance Month

April marks Autism Acceptance Month, a time to recognize and support individuals with autism and their families in our community and across the country.

This month is about more than awareness, it is about acceptance, inclusion, and making sure every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Autism affects 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States, and it is important that we continue working toward communities that are accessible, supportive, and understanding.

On April 2, we also recognize World Autism Awareness Day, which serves as a reminder to listen, learn, and uplift the voices and experiences of people with autism.

My office is committed to connecting constituents with resources and services that support individuals with autism and their families.

If you or someone you know is looking for support, please do not hesitate to reach out (215-572-5210 or email- RepNelson@PaHouse.Net).

Together, we can help build a more inclusive community for all.

PECO Rate Increase

Standing Up Against Proposed PECO Rate Increases

I joined my colleagues in the Montgomery County Delegation in opposing PECO’s proposed electric and natural gas rate increases. If approved, these hikes would raise electric bills by about $20 per month and gas bills by roughly $14 per month for residents across southeastern Pennsylvania.

I have heard from many of you who are already feeling the strain of rising costs, from groceries to healthcare to filling your gas tank. Another increase in utility bills is simply too much, especially when families are still dealing with the impact of prior rate hikes.

These proposed increases shift the burden of broader energy market challenges directly onto consumers. That is not fair to residents who had no role in creating those pressures. We need stronger accountability and better planning to ensure that costs are not passed along without justification.

I also supported House Bill 1834, which would help ensure that large-scale energy users, like data centers, pay their fair share instead of placing additional strain on everyday ratepayers.

I will continue advocating for policies that protect our community from unnecessary cost increases and keep essential services affordable.

New SNAP Work Requirements

SNAP Work Requirements Have Expanded

MORE Pennsylvanians must now meet work requirements to stay eligible for SNAP. Federal changes last year mean some SNAP recipients must work, volunteer, or participate in education or job training for at least 20 hours per week and report that they are meeting this requirement. If the requirement is not met, benefits may be limited to three months within a three-year period.

The rules were expanded to include individuals who:

  • Are 18 to 64 years old

  • Do not have a dependent child under 14

  • Are considered physically and mentally able to work

Additionally, exemptions for veterans and individuals who aged out of foster care under age 25 have ended.

To meet the requirement, you must:

  • Work at least 20 hours per week or earn at least $217.50 per week before taxes

  • Participate in education or job training for at least 20 hours per week or at least half time

  • Complete approved community service hours as assigned by your caseworker

If your hours drop below the requirement, you must report the change within 10 days.

Some individuals may still qualify for exemptions, including those who are:

  • Pregnant

  • Medically unable to work

  • Caring for someone who is ill or disabled

  • Experiencing homelessness

  • Participating in drug or alcohol treatment

  • Receiving unemployment compensation

  • Temporarily unemployed and expecting to return to work within 60 days

To check whether these rules apply to you and learn what to do next, use the online screening tool at dhs.pa.gov/work. You may also contact your County Assistance Office or call the Statewide Customer Service Center at 1-877-395-8930.

If you have issues with your benefits, please don't hesitate to contact my office at RepNelson@PAHouse.net or 215-572-5210.
