Munroe bill to help military families passes Senate

HARRISBURG, Oct. 25 – State Rep. Brian Munroe’s bill that would ease the transition for children of service members switching schools due to a parent’s transfer was unanimously approved by the Senate today.

House Bill 1094 would allow children of military families to access registration and enrollment to a school district at the same time it is open to the general population. Specifically, it would allow a child whose parent or guardian is an active-duty member of the military and has received official military orders to transfer into or within the Commonwealth.

Under the current process in the Commonwealth, students of military families that are transferring on official military permanent change of station orders are not eligible to register in classes, enroll in specialized academic programs, or submit their children’s names in lotteries for charter or magnet schools until they are physically located within the district boundaries.

“As a Navy veteran I have seen firsthand how a move impacts a military family,” Munroe said. “This will help relieve a part of that burden.”

House Bill 1094 now heads to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk and awaits his signature. If signed, H.B. 1094 would mark the first successful bill authored by Munroe, who was sworn into his first term in January.
