Back to Harrisburg to protect our hospitals & more

Happy (almost) summer to my neighbors of the 168th! ??

If you’ve been reading this newsletter for the past few years, you know summer is my favorite time of year. Baseball, sunshine, warm weather...my favorites! I hope everyone enjoyed the “unofficial” start of summer, despite it being sort of a washout.

I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to all the graduates of the 168th! I know we just finished up several weeks of college graduations and are now headed into a few weeks of high school graduations. To all those moving on to their next chapter, congratulations on all you have accomplished!

We also just finished up the primary season here in Pennsylvania. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to all those who worked the polls. Your efforts make our democracy work, and our elections would not happen without your dedication and service. Thank you!

Next week, the legislature heads back to Harrisburg, and we will be there for most of June. I’m looking forward to hearing from our Senate colleagues regarding the budget bill (with bipartisan support) we sent over to them in April. This budget continues to address the need for the state to properly fund our public schools (as we are under court order to do), invest in workforce development and housing, and address funding for services providing for safety, health, and community growth.

I know there is a desire to get this budget done in a much timelier manner than last year, and I am hopeful our Senate colleagues will be sharing their thoughts on the budget soon.

But budget is not the only thing on the agenda in Harrisburg; I currently have two bills scheduled to run the first week of June. House Bill 1106, the “Removing Administrative Burden for Chiropractors” legislation, is scheduled to run on the House floor next week. I'm hopeful it will move forward quickly, having received unanimous support from the Professional Licensure committee. This would go far toward supporting PA’s chiropractors and making it easier to practice in the commonwealth, and for patients to access this type of care.

I am also very excited about House Bill 2162, “Incentivizing Pharmaceutical & Biomedical Innovation in Pennsylvania,” which will run in the Health Committee. This bill originated in a meeting of the bipartisan, bicameral (i.e. both House & Senate) Competitiveness Caucus, where we meet to discuss ways to bring innovation and business to PA.

I connected with industry leaders who live in the 168th to develop this legislation, which aims to help break down one of the (many) barriers making it difficult for companies doing groundbreaking work in health and science to locate in PA and move their business forward. This is a simple bill around licensing which could have a big impact, and I am thrilled to have worked on it in a bipartisan manner with my colleagues Rep. Paul Friel (D-Chester) and Rep. Tom Kutz (R-Cumberland)!

Things are going to (hopefully) start moving fast as we tick down to the June 30th budget deadline. Stay tuned, and GO PHILLIES!

"The Future of Healthcare" Policy Hearing

What's the future of healthcare when it comes to medicine, biotech and policy? Last Friday, I joined healthcare pioneers, top executives, and our hosts Rep. Bridget M Kosierowski & Rep. Paul Friel to hear what PA’s forecast looks like.

The conversation focused on the challenges Pennsylvania faces and explored how innovation and policy changes can address them.

I have been pushing hard to get my hospital protection bill, H.B. 1460, to Governor Shapiro’s desk to create more oversight for private equity looking to acquire hospitals in PA, but we will need an all hands on deck approach to ensure that every Pennsylvanian has access to high quality, affordable healthcare.

PA Humanities: Do you know a Window Keeper?

PA Humanities is not new as an impactful presence in our commonwealth. Founded over 50 years ago, their mission is to champion the humanities to spark civic engagement, build community, educate, inspire, and make long-lasting change.

I recently had the opportunity to connect more formally with this group and one of its leaders who hails from the 168th to learn about the wonderful things they are doing to advance knowledge and increase awareness of the humanities.

They are currently seeking nominees for their new statewide initiative, The Window Keeper: Civic Honors. As part of the America250PA celebrations coming up this summer, they are looking to honor those who take on this responsibility and illuminate what’s possible in their communities, helping others to connect and participate more fully in civic life.

The award is named after the Yolanda Wisher’s poem, “The Window Keeper,” which imagines the Declaration of Independence as a window that must be cleaned and cared for so that it can continue to let in and reflect the light of each new day.

I know I already have a few 168th “Window Keepers” in mind. Who might you know to nominate?

Women's Resource Center - Breakthrough Breakfast

Earlier this month, I presented the Women’s Resource Center with $100,000 to help fund their Girls Lead program at their annual Breakthrough Breakfast. This funding was secured in conjunction with Rep. Melissa Shusterman.

I have been familiar with the work of the Women’s Resource Center since my time as a commissioner in Radnor, and it was one of the first non-profits I visited after being elected to state office. Girls Lead has been a beacon of strength and community for young girls in the region for over two decades. This program is aimed at helping middle and high school girls with untapped leadership potential find their footing and thrive.

We are all better when our young women can move through the world with confidence. Beth Monroe, WRC's Executive Director, and Board President Bridgett Battles lead the way in this amazing work! Thank you to all the facilitators who work to make the program possible, and especially the Girls Lead Program Director, Danielle Siwek, for helping to shape our female leaders of the future!

Shred event with Sen. Cappelletti

Senator Amanda Cappelletti and I are so grateful to everyone who came out to our annual shred event last weekend! Thank you to our staff, thank you to Archbishop John Carroll High School for hosting us and thank you J&K Secure Shredding for being such a great partner!

It was a beautiful day for shredding and collecting old and unused prescription medications. Thank you to the Delaware County District Attorney's Office for helping to dispose of these medications.

Our next event will be in August with Senator John Kane at Penn State Brandywine - we’ll be shredding, collecting medications and collecting electronics!! Stay tuned for more info!

Fair Acres opens new kitchen

I was thrilled to help cut the ribbon on the brand-new cafeteria and state of the art kitchen at Fair Acres Geriatric Center last week along with fellow House colleagues, Delaware County Council Chair Richard Womack, Councilwoman Joanne Phillips, and Sen. John Kane.

Executive Director, Bill D'Amico, showed off the brand-new kitchen where chefs were working on their next meal for residents. Over 1,100 meals and snacks are prepared and delivered from this kitchen daily! We even got to sample some delicious salads, sandwiches, and breakfast items from the menu.

Fair Acres is truly a jewel of not just the 168th, but all of Delaware County! Thank you to the dedicated staff for the great care you show residents, and to Delaware County Council for the investments you continue to make in the facility to care for our aging population!

Peter's Place celebrates 25 years

Last week I had the honor of presenting Peter's Place: A Center for Grieving Children and Families with a PA House of Representatives citation to commemorate their 25th Anniversary!

Peter’s Place was founded in 2001 in memory of Peter Morsbach. After Peter’s sudden death at the age of ten, his family and friends became aware that there were few support options for grieving families, especially for those who could not afford it.

Friends of the Morsbach family created Peter’s Place, the first family grief support agency of its kind to serve our area. Another jewel of the 168th, Peter's Place combines awareness of local community needs, with professional excellence, and extensive research on best practices to be a true one-of-a-kind organization!

It was wonderful to meet the advisory board members that support this incredible work!

Honoring those who gave all on Memorial Day

It was a busy morning this Memorial Day across the 168th!

First, I joined the Middletown Township Historical Society and the Bonaventure-Clark-Murphy VFW Post 6613/Lenni for a Memorial Day Service at the Middletown Township WWII Honor Roll.

Larry Weathers gave the very poignant reminder, “all gave some, some gave all” as we offered sincere thanks to those who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Then I made my way to Radnor, where the rain held off and let us make our own shine as we honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could gather as a community to celebrate all that makes our country so special.

It was a wonderful celebration led by Radnor Township Police Department, Radnor Fire Company, the Radnor High School Marching Band and followed by so many great Radnor mainstays like the Radnor High School Scholarship Fund, Wayne Business Association, Radnor Memorial Library, Radnor Historical Society, Radnor League of Women Voters, and Radnor Wayne Little League! I had a blast marching with Radnor Township Commissioners Maggy Myers, Commissioner Moira Mulroney, and Cathy Agnew!

Cheers to all who ignored the gloomy skies to celebrate one of Radnor’s time-honored traditions, and then stayed for the annual ceremony to honor all those from Radnor who have been lost while serving our country.

Riverbend with Ithan Elementary

Marie and I went on a field trip on Tuesday! At the invitation of Executive Director Erin Reilly, we joined 4th graders from Ithan Elementary School as they visited Riverbend Environmental Education Center in Gladwyne.

If you have never been here, go visit and immerse yourself in nature. In addition to field trips they offer summer camps grounded in environmental literacy. We visited with the classroom animals, walked to the creek, and I got to see one of Ithan’s favorite 4th grade teachers, Pam Cooper!

Town Hall with Congresswoman Scanlon & Rep. O'Mara

I joined two of my fellow Delco legislators, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon and Rep. Jennifer O’Mara, recently for a wide-ranging, informative town hall at Delaware County Community College.

We fielded audience questions about fire and EMS companies and the trend of consolidation, how to ensure free and fair elections and what you can do to get involved, as well as how Congress is responding to the Trump administration.

I love when I get to hear directly from constituents about their most pressing concerns!

Making a Difference Awards

Last night I had the honor of emceeing the 14th annual Making a Difference Awards! Honorees and their families gathered at Radnor High School to celebrate students and educators in Delco’s school districts who demonstrate exceptional support, acceptance, and understanding to ensure the inclusion of classmates of all abilities as well as students who have persevered and overcome challenges to be successful within an inclusive setting.

These awards are given by the DCIU’s Delaware County Right to Education Local Task Force.  Congratulations to all the honorees, including Radnor Elementary School secretary, Ann VonHertsenberg!

Visit to Granite Farms Estates

Kate and I made a visit out to Granite Farms Estates this morning to process some applications for the very popular SEPTA Senior Fare program!

While folks waited, I talked to residents about their most pressing issues including retired teacher COLAs, some of the big projects coming to Middletown, and the upcoming budget. I love when I get to meet with residents right in their homes!

REMINDER: Distracted driving is soon a fineable offense

Beginning June 5, 2025, law enforcement began issuing written warnings for violations of "Paul Miller's Law" concerning distracted driving. Law enforcement will have the ability to issue summary citations (a $50 base fine) to violators beginning June 6, 2026. You can be cited for driving while using a hand-held device in Pennsylvania, even while stopped at a red light or traffic jam. There are exceptions for contacting emergency officials and hands-free technology.

Signed by Gov. Shapiro in 2024, “Paul Miller’s Law” was named for a 21-year-old Scranton man who was killed in a 2010 crash involving a truck driver who was using a cell phone.

Contest: Win the chance to be a PA Ranger for a Day!

Ever wonder what Pennsylvania looks like through a park ranger's eyes? This summer, visitPA and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are teaming up to give one lucky winner and their guest a one-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes experience at one of the state's most stunning parks.

You'll spend a full day with people who know every trail, every hidden waterfall, every special spot you don't want to miss. You'll explore the way state park employees do, off the beaten path and into the wild spaces that make PA parks worth protecting. This won’t be your average park visit!

All the details on how to enter the contest and what the day will entail are here: https://www.visitpa.com/ranger/

New student loan program for grad students

Pennsylvania graduate students pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and other health-related fields could soon have access to new financial support through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency.

The agency recently launched a new Medical and Health Professional Loan Program in response to the possible elimination of the federal Graduate PLUS Program. The goal is to help students continue pursuing advanced degrees despite rising education costs and tighter federal borrowing limits.

The program includes:

  • Competitive fixed interest rates
  • No application or origination fees
  • Flexible repayment options
  • Deferred repayment during residency, fellowship, internship, research, & clinical training
  • Potentially less reliance on co-signers

PHEAA also continues to offer financial support for graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering, education, law, MBA programs, and other fields through its Graduate Loan Program.
