PITTSBURGH, Aug. 18 – State Rep. Aerion Abney today announced that Pittsburgh has been awarded nearly $3.75 million in state funding through Pennsylvania’s Multimodal Transportation Fund to support two important transportation infrastructure projects in the city.
The awards include $3 million for the renovation of the Boulevard of the Allies in Pittsburgh’s Central Business District and $739,007 to upgrade and expand the North Shore’s overhead lane use control system.
“These investments are about making Pittsburgh’s infrastructure safer, more reliable and better equipped to serve our growing city,” Abney said. “From improving one of our most important downtown corridors to modernizing a critical traffic management system on the North Shore, these projects will make a real difference for residents, workers, businesses and visitors. I’m proud to see state resources coming back to Pittsburgh to strengthen our transportation network and support our local economy.”
The Boulevard of the Allies project will repave the roadway between Commonwealth and Grant streets in Pittsburgh’s Central Business District and add new median planters. The improvements will help make this important downtown corridor safer, smoother and more inviting.
The North Shore Overhead Lane Use Control Upgrade and Expansion project will modernize the overhead lane control system on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. The system is more than 25 years old, and these upgrades will help keep it working safely and reliably for years to come.
The projects are part of a statewide investment of $54 million for 50 highway, bridge, aviation, port, bicycle and pedestrian projects across 27 counties through the Multimodal Transportation Fund. The program is designed to improve safety, strengthen local economies and enhance mobility by investing in transportation infrastructure that connects communities and people to opportunity.
“Transportation infrastructure is foundational to a thriving Pittsburgh,” Abney said. “These grants demonstrate what we can accomplish when state and local government work together to address infrastructure needs and make strategic investments in our communities. I thank the Shapiro Administration and PennDOT for recognizing the importance of these projects and investing in Pittsburgh.”
Abney represents the 19th Legislative District, comprised of the Hill District, North Side, South Side, Allentown, Hazelwood, Downtown, The Bluff, Knoxville, Beltzhoover, Manchester, Allentown, Windgap, Chartiers, Sheraden, Elliot, and North, South and West Oakland sections of Pittsburgh.
