Zabel announces $750,000 grant for Breaking Bread Community

(Oct 31, 2022)

HARRISBURG, Oct. 31 – Building on his previous work to secure the state funding needed for critical economic development projects in his legislative district, state Rep. Mike Zabel today announced $750,000 in state grant funding for Breaking Bread Community, which is an initiative through the Student Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia . According to Zabel, the funding was made available through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and will be used to cover the costs of maintaining a warming center for anyone needing services and housing help, as well as a night shelter for individuals. Additionally, the funding will be utilized to renovate the community area and offices on the first floor, while upgrading the sleeping spaces on the second and third floors. The renovations will include a new heating and air conditioning unit, along with modernizing the electrical and fire alarm infrastructure. “As harsh winter weather approaches, ensuring members of our community have a warm, safe space to spend the night is an initiative we can all support and agree upon,” Zabel said. “Seeing our friends, neighbors and colleagues band together in support of this critical program reiterates the strength and unity of the Delco community.” The RACP is administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvements. HARRISBURG, Oct. 26 – State Rep. Mike Zabel, D-Delaware, today announced the awarding of $8 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant funding for Aldan Borough, Upper Darby Township, Upper Darby School District and Delaware County Community College. A breakdown of the funding announced by Zabel is as follows: $3 million for Delaware County Community College. $2.5 million for Upper Darby School District. $2 million for Upper Darby Township. $500,000 for Aldan Borough. “Grant funding at this scale is a game changer for projects that were in need of additional funding and is the latest example of tax dollars being reinvested to strengthen our community,” Zabel said. “It’s rewarding when state funds are utilized to fund projects that will directly benefit every resident of Delaware County.” The $3 million award for Delaware County Community College will be earmarked to establish a workforce-focused campus to provide a region-tailored education and training ecosystem. In addition, the funding will be used to complete renovations on existing campus structures, while also offsetting the cost of demolishing buildings that are no longer viable for future campus functionality. McNeill, Zabel introduce legislation to cap soaring insulin prices

(Oct 24, 2022)

HARRISBURG, Oct. 24 – State Reps. Jeanne McNeill and Mike Zabel have introduced legislation that would cap out-of-pocket insulin prices at $35 a month. “The prices for insulin have been skyrocketing for decades in Pennsylvania and sadly too many people are resorting to rationing their life-sustaining medicine or deciding between it and putting food on their table or paying their bills,” said McNeill, D-Lehigh. “It’s time to stop the out-of-control costs and allow everyone who needs this medicine the ability to access it affordably.” “Millions of Americans, including a large swath of seniors, depend on insulin in their daily lives. It is unacceptable that the price of this life-sustaining medication continues to rise year after year,” said Zabel, D-Delaware. “Representative Jeanne McNeill’s and my legislation would seek to reduce the cost burden on individuals who rely on insulin by capping the price at $35. This would help alleviate the financial stress of so many who have been unfairly forced to choose between their medication and other basic necessities.” According to McNeill, H.B. 2878 is a new version of H.B. 460, which the legislators introduced earlier this legislative session, but instead of capping the amount an insured patient could spend per 30-day supply at $100, this would cap the price at $35 per 30-day supply. McNeill said that insulin caps are a bipartisan issue. Twenty-one states Read more
