SREHUP’s Breaking Bread Community project will be a homelessness eradication resource center, located in Upper Darby Township, proving services and housing help for anyone who may need them. It will also include a night shelter for at least 30 individuals. The project site is a three-story building and will require:
- A full renovation to provide a day use community area and offices on the first floor.
- Sleeping spaces on the second and third floors.
- New heating, air conditioning, electrical and fire alarm infrastructure.
- New interiors and finishes.
- New bathrooms on every floor.
- Improvements to the existing elevator.
“The Student Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia is doing great work across the region to make sure those who are in need, are taken care of during the most extreme weather and throughout the year,” said Curry. “We are currently experiencing a crisis of people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. This funding will help the organization provide necessary services with dignity and respect. I am pleased to see this funding awarded to a project right here in Upper Darby Township.”
“This funding will help us offer needed resources for the community of people experiencing housing and food insecurity,” said Stephanie Sena, founder, SREHUP. “We will offer a 24-hour refuge from the elements, and most importantly, relationship, love and community. This is a massive grant and will help us do so much good in the community!”
The Breaking Bread Community will also provide legal aid, health care, workshops, gardening, meals and community services.
The RACP grant is administered by the Office of the Budget whose grants aim to bolster community development and economic activity.
