HARRISBURG, Sept. 20 – State Rep. Leanne Krueger announced today three grants totaling $473,816 in state funding through the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
Brookhaven Borough received $211,140 through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Grant Program to install field lighting at Samson and Memorial parks to allow both baseball and softball games to be played into the early evening hours. It will also allow other types of community events to take place into a later hour of the day.
“I am pleased to see Brookhaven Borough receive this funding,” said Krueger, D-Delaware. “Back in February, I met with parents who advocated for field lighting so more children can play baseball and softball. This state grant will benefit everyone who uses these fields.”
Nether Providence Township received $122,676 through the Greenways, Trails and Recreation Grant Program for Phase I of trail development in Houston Park. This project will install a trailhead, a small parking area including an ADA-compliant space, a trail connection to the athletic fields, and the partial restoration of a historic bridge.
Nether Providence Township also received $140,000 through the Watershed Restoration and Protection Grant Program for the Houston Community Park streambank restoration project along Ridley Creek. The township will restore and stabilize a portion of the streambank and install native plants to establish a riparian buffer along the Ridley Creek watershed. The restorations include site preparation, including clearing and grubbing, erosion and sediment control along with engineering and inspection costs. Restoring this stretch of streambank will have a large impact on the amount of sedimentation that is dumped into the Ridley Creek watershed.
“Parks and recreation areas are important to quality of life for our residents. So many local residents started using Houston Park during the pandemic. These improvements to both the trails and the streambank will not only improve Houston Park by making it more ADA-compliant and accessible but will also restore and improve the Ridley Creek watershed,” said Krueger.
Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program funds, provided through the Commonwealth Financing Authority, can be used to develop, rehabilitate and improve public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails and river conservation.
Watershed Restoration and Protection funds, also provided through the Commonwealth Financing Authority, can be used for projects which involve the construction, improvement, expansion, repair, maintenance or rehabilitation of new or existing watershed protection Best Management Practices.
