House hails West Greene Lady Pioneers, PIAA softball victors

HARRISBURG, June 27 – State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Greene/Fayette/Washington, today saluted the West Greene High School Lady Pioneers softball team, the Class A state champions, before the state House of Representatives.

“Ten days ago in State College – in the heat and humidity – the Lady Pioneers staged a comeback for the ages, coming back from a 7-to-0 deficit after the second inning to win the championship 9 to 8 against Williams Valley,” Snyder told her House colleagues. “Down 7 to zip after two innings and coming back to win it all in the biggest game of the year is a little like Hoosiers, Rocky and the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates all wrapped in one.”

Snyder noted that last year she was touting the Lady Pioneers after the team from Center Township, Greene County, won the WPIAL championship and lost in the state championship to the same Williams Valley team from upper Dauphin County.

“This year, they finished at 26-1, won the WPIAL championship again, and captured the first state title in any sport for West Greene,” said Snyder, calling the title run “a story about grit, about overcoming incredible odds and refusing to back down in the face of adversity.”
