AVONDALE, Aug. 18 – Today, state Rep. Christina Sappey announced that $645,118 in funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Multimodal Transportation Fund will go toward critical roadway needs in Avondale Borough.
Funding will support full reconstruction of the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in the borough, which has experienced severe, recurring potholes and ruts caused by underlying subgrade and base failures. Road conditions in the area, which have created significant, ongoing safety concerns, cannot be adequately resolved through routine surface repairs.
The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to ensure a safe and reliable system of transportation statewide, with 50 projects throughout Pennsylvania receiving $54 million in total.
“I’m extremely pleased that the state is addressing the root causes of this roadway deterioration,” Sappey said. “Improving this stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue will greatly improve safety and quality of life for residents and commuters using this critical route. Thank you to PennDOT for its investment, and Avondale Borough for its collaboration and thoughtful, well-engineered solution to this issue.”
Sen. John I. Kane commended investment in the project as “a smart, much-needed step for our community.
“Strengthening what’s beneath the road and upgrading the infrastructure folks rely on every day will make Pennsylvania Avenue safer, more reliable, and built to last,” Kane said. “I was proud to work alongside Rep. Sappey and our local officials to help secure this funding and deliver improvements that will benefit everyone who calls this community home.”
Avondale Borough Mayor Susan Rzucidlo added that the borough is “so very grateful” for Sappey and Kane for their ongoing support.
“The work needed on the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue is long overdue, and this funding will make a meaningful difference for our residents and our community,” Rzucidlo said. “We are truly grateful for their continued commitment to Avondale Borough.”
