KENNETT SQUARE, Nov. 11 – State Rep. Christina Sappey honored approximately 50 veterans in the 158th District and their family members during her annual veterans’ breakfast at the Kennett VFW Post 5467 today.
Sappey thanked the group for their service and honored the attending veterans with certificates and pins of recognition.
“This Veterans Day gathering is one of my favorite events as a legislator,” Sappey said. “As the proud daughter of a navy veteran and a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, I am honored for the opportunity to meet you all and recognize your sacrifice for our nation.
“Our quality of life is a direct result of the commitment made by the millions of American women and men who proudly serve and have served our country.”
The event offered a free, hot breakfast provided from a local catering company, Catering by Occasion, as well as information on services and assistance available to veterans in Pennsylvania.
The event also featured keynote speaker retired Brig. Gen. George Schwartz. Schwartz served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve and Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He was mobilized for several domestic emergencies and deployed for two overseas missions.
Schwartz holds a number of advanced degrees and has earned many awards, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and the French National Defense Medal in Gold. Currently, he is an assistant professor of leadership and the director of the Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Planning and Management Program at Immaculata University.
Boy Scout Troop 53 of Landenberg provided the Color Guard, the Rev. David Grainson of St. Michael Lutheran gave the invocation, the benediction was given by Annalie Korengel of Unionville Presbyterian and a quartet of Kennett Square High School students recited the national anthem.
