Samuelson secures $370,000 for Bethlehem sidewalk, streetscape improvements

HARRISBURG, May 21 – State Rep. Steve Samuelson is pleased to announce that he has secured $370,00 in state grant funding for a major Bethlehem sidewalk and streetscape improvement project.

“This major undertaking will repair and replace the sidewalks in front of more than 25 businesses and impact more than 60 different properties in Bethlehem’s Southside Business District along the West 4th Street corridor between South New Street and Broadway,” Samuelson said. “I worked diligently with city officials and my colleagues at the state level to ensure that this funding would be approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority and I am happy to see that the project can now move forward.”

The sidewalk improvements have been identified as a priority project by the Southside Arts District, a Main Street inspired program of the Bethlehem Economic Development Corp.

Project work will include removing and replacing brick, sidewalk and curb and building nine ADA-compliant curb ramps. Additional streetscape enhancements will involve removing and replacing 10 street trees and planting nine trees as appropriate.

Samuelson said he secured the money through the state’s Local Share Account program, which is funded by tax proceeds at Pennsylvania’s casinos.
