Last Friday, I had the privilege of celebrating Shaler Area Middle School’s recognition as a 2026 Don Eichhorn School to Watch. This honor reflects the unwavering commitment of the school’s educators and staff, who work every day to cultivate an environment that sparks intellectual curiosity and lays the foundation for lifelong learning. Their dedication to meeting the unique academic and social-emotional needs of middle school students is evident in every classroom.
The School to Watch designation is not awarded lightly. Schools undergo a rigorous process that begins with a comprehensive application demonstrating alignment with the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform’s criteria. Selected schools then host an in-depth site visit, where evaluators observe classrooms, engage with students, families, and staff, and review key indicators such as student achievement, school climate, and instructional quality.
This recognition is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when educators, families, and students come together with a shared purpose. As schools across the Commonwealth look to Shaler Area Middle School as a model of excellence, I am proud to represent the Shaler Area School District.

Due to ongoing construction by People’s Gas Company outside our district office, parking is restricted along the 51st block of Butler Street. Please be advised that parking will be restricted from now until July 8th. I understand this is a major inconvenience to neighbors looking to physically stop in our district office; folks are welcome to park along Stanton Avenue, 52nd Street, or the residential streets like Dresden Way and Carnegie Street behind the office. Feel free to call my office at (412) 781-2750 with any questions.
