Petrarca announces upcoming sign-up date for Westmoreland County seniors to apply for Farmer’s Market Nutrition, County Food Bank programs

VANDERGRIFT, July 29 – Westmoreland County seniors in need of food assistance will soon be able to apply for the state’s Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program and the Westmoreland County Food Bank benefit program, state Rep. Joseph Petrarca announced.

Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong/Indiana, said seniors who have not already applied for this year’s SFMNP can do so from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the A.V. Germano Hall, located at 100 West 2nd Ave., Derry.

The 2019 SFMNP provides eligible seniors with vouchers to purchase produce grown in Pennsylvania. Sponsored by the state Department of Agriculture, the SFMNP provides four $5 checks to be used at participating farmer’s markets from June 1 until Nov. 30. Signups for the county’s food bank benefit program will take place after 10:35 a.m.

“We’re pleased that the county food bank and the Westmoreland County Area Agency on Aging were able to work together with our office staff to provide this opportunity for seniors in need to apply for both the state and county food bank programs,” Petrarca said. “Over the past few years, seniors in the Derry area have been without a sign-up location, which created a significant hardship for seniors who were unable to travel to another site, due to health concerns or transportation limitations.”

Eligible seniors for SFMNP must be 60 or older, be a resident of Westmoreland County, and meet the following income guidelines: $23,107 for one person in the household and $31,284 for two people in the household. Seniors must bring proof of income, a photo ID and a utility bill for verification purposes.
