Burns urges governor to help push for American-made steel bill

H.B. 1018 would require American-made steel for all PA projects receiving public assistance

HARRISBURG, April 13 — After Gov. Josh Shapiro blasted plans for the White House ballroom last week for reportedly relying on foreign steel, state Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria, urged the governor to help push for his bill to require American-made steel for all construction work receiving public funding or tax incentives in Pennsylvania.

While state law already requires state and municipal governments to use American-made steel in their projects, H.B. 1018 would extend that requirement to private entities receiving public money.

Burns’ bill passed the House last year on a vote of 200-2 and is pending in the Senate State Government Committee.

“I agree wholeheartedly with the governor—American steelworkers first,” Burns said. “My bill is lined up and ready to go. It passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support and needs one more push to get it through the state Senate. I’d welcome the governor’s support in getting House Bill 1018 passed by the Senate and signed into law so we can support American steelworkers.”

The bill is part of Burns’ “American Made Jobs Plan,” a package designed to end our economy’s heavy reliance on China and other countries and reverse decades of unfair trade policies, driven by corporate greed and special interests, that have helped wipe out the middle class in Pennsylvania and Cambria County.
