Erie lawmakers announce $45,000 investment to bolster tourism

Erie Area Convention & Visitors Bureau to receive funding

HARRISBURG, Nov. 13 – State lawmakers Reps. Ryan Bizzarro, Pat Harkins and Bob Merski announced the state is investing $45,000 in the Erie Area Convention & Visitors Bureau as part of the state’s commitment to economic development.

“The state is committed to maximizing economic opportunities, and that includes for the planning and implementation of major events that draw visitors and dollars to our community,” said Bizzarro, who represents Fairview and Millcreek townships.

The announcement is part of the state’s $5 million investment to maximize the economic benefits for 11 scheduled events in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The investments have been approved through the Department of Economic Development’s Sports Marketing and Tourism Program.

“The Erie region’s proud tradition of fishing runs deep in our community's heritage,” Merski said. “This cherished pastime not only brings people together but also showcases the natural beauty and rich resources of our region. The opportunity to host a Major League Fishing tournament in our own backyard is a privilege, and this boost in funding will assist in the operation of the tournament.”

The state investment comes on the heels of 2024 Major League Fishing tournament held in August, which brought an estimated $119,237 in revenue to northwestern Pennsylvania.

“This event not only celebrates our local fishing traditions but also boosts our local economy and fosters community spirit. I look forward to seeing everyone at the tournament and witnessing the positive impact this grant will have,” Harkins said.
