HARRISBURG, Nov. 25 – State Reps. Pat Harkins and Bob Merski, both D-Erie, today announced the awarding of laptops to the Erie County Public Library through the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority's Digital Connectivity Technology Program. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and enhance digital literacy in communities across Pennsylvania.
The Erie County Public Library is set to receive 70 laptops, while the Arts Council of Erie will acquire 20 laptops. Both sets of devices will be made available for public use and will support various educational programs. The distribution of these laptops is part of a broader effort to ensure all Pennsylvanians have access to the technology and skills necessary to participate in the modern digital economy.
“Access to technology is no longer a luxury; it's a necessity in today's world,” Harkins said. “These laptops will provide invaluable resources to Erie residents, helping them develop digital skills, search for jobs and access online educational opportunities. I'm proud to see our community benefiting from this important state initiative.”
Merski said, “The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority's efforts to promote digital equity are crucial for our region's growth and development. By equipping our public library with these laptops, we're opening doors for Erie residents of all ages to engage with technology and enhancing their skills and competitiveness in an increasingly digital world."
The laptops will be integrated into the library's existing digital literacy programs and will also be available for patrons to use on-site for research, job applications, and other essential online tasks.
Both representatives emphasized that this initiative is a step toward ensuring that Erie County residents have the tools they need to thrive in a digital age, regardless of their economic background.
