Merski, Harkins: $127,000 secured for Erie Police Department

Funding to help offset cost of new vehicle for Crisis Car unit

HARRISBURG, Nov. 20 – State Reps. Bob Merski and Pat Harkins, both D-Erie, today announced $127,000 in Department of Community and Economic Development grants to help with the purchase of a new vehicle for the recently re-established Crisis Car unit of the Erie Police Department.

“Securing grant funding for the Erie Police Department's Crisis Car unit is vital to our community” Merski said. “As the number of mental health-related calls continues to rise, this funding ensures that we can provide timely, compassionate, and effective responses.”

Harkins said, “The Crisis Car unit plays a crucial role in connecting individuals with the support and resources they need, and this investment underscores our commitment to improving public safety and mental health services in Erie."

The Crisis Car unit of the Erie Police Department was re-established in early May of last year in response to the growing number of mental-health related calls in the city. The officers on the unit completed specialized training in mental health crises, substance abuse, domestic violence, and suicidal individuals.
