Greenville student wins Pa. House of Representatives Scholarship
HARRISBURG, April 27 – State Rep. Mark Longietti congratulated Sarah Shannon, a senior at Greenville Junior/Senior High School, one of two winners of the 2015-16 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship.
“It’s exciting to see a young person excel academically and be rewarded for her hard work,” said Longietti, whose legislative district includes Greenville. “I congratulate Sarah for this significant accomplishment and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
The program provides four-year scholarships to two high school seniors per year. Each award consists of the value of one semester of tuition at the State System of Higher Education for each of four years. Eligible educational institutions include nearly all colleges, universities and career schools in Pennsylvania.
To qualify, a student must have attained a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Other factors taken into consideration for the awards are a student’s commitment to community, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and financial need.
In addition, students had to submit an essay discussing at least two industrial sectors in Pennsylvania, describing what role state government has played in their growth.
The scholarship program is privately funded by individual and corporate donations. It is administered through the Foundation for Enhancing Communities. Scholarships are awarded through an independent panel of judges chosen by the foundation.
This year’s other winner is Luke Reiner, a student from Weatherly Area High School in Carbon County.
