HARRISBURG, Jan. 17 – Lackawanna County Planning and Economic Development today was awarded an $800,108 grant through Pennsylvania’s Abandoned Mine Lands and Acid Mine Drainage Program, according to state Rep. Bridget M. Kosierowski.
Approximately 500,000 cubic yards of red ash and culm waste will be removed from a 35-acre abandoned mine site at Dickson High School in Dickson City Borough. Project work includes grading, stabilization, and seeding and repair to roadways affected by the project work.
“Northeast Pennsylvania has a long and storied history with coal mining. Unfortunately, one of the downsides has been the waste piles that dot many communities,” said Kosierowski, D-Lackawanna. “This large influx of state dollars will allow the Dickson site to be remediated and improved for potential future use.”
The grant was approved by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
