LaSalle Academy and Young Scholars Charter School receive Safe Schools Targeted Grants

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 21 – As part of his continuing leadership on school safety in the commonwealth, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta announced two schools in the 181st Legislative District have been awarded a combined $64,531 in state funding for school safety and violence reduction initiatives.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education announced $7.2 million in Safe Schools Targeted Grants awarded to schools to prevent and reduce violent incidents. The grants can be used to purchase safety and security-related equipment and to fund training for staff and police officers.

“Children should not have to worry about gun violence taking place in their school. Unfortunately, the reality is that it could happen anywhere,” Kenyatta said. “School should be a safe environment where students can learn and grow. The funding being awarded to these two schools will help them continue to be a nurturing and safe space for children.”

LaSalle Academy will receive $23,783 for the purchase of equipment and Young Scholars Charter School will receive $20,000 for a public safety program.

PDE’s Office for Safe Schools offers four types of safety grants: equipment grants of up to $25,000, program grants of up to $20,000, School Police Officer grants of up to $40,000 and School Resource Officer grants of up to $60,000. Each grant is aimed at assisting schools in reducing disciplinary actions and promoting an environment of greater productivity, safety and learning.
