Isaacson bill to cap rental application fees advances through Senate

HARRISBURG, Oct. 21 – Today, legislation brought forth by state Rep. Mary Isaacson (H.B. 558) that would put a cap on rental application fees advanced through the state Senate.

The bill would amend The Landlord Tenant Act of 1951, limiting a landlord or landlord’s agent to only charge rental application fees reasonably related to actual administrative expenses incurred for an application. The bill would also prohibit application fees as being a general revenue source for a landlord.

“For too long, landlords have been preying on renters across the commonwealth with excessive fees that limit opportunities to find adequate housing,” Isaacson said. “With this bill, both chambers have recognized that someone shouldn’t have to stop applying for housing because of simple paperwork. I appreciate my colleagues handing a much-needed victory to our renters,” Isaacson said.

The bill now moves to the governor’s desk for his signature.
