Property Tax and Rent rebates are on the way!

On July 1, the state Treasury began distributing more than $266 million in property tax and rent rebates to about 450,000 Pennsylvania seniors and other eligible residents.

On July 1, the state Treasury began distributing more than $266 million in property tax and rent rebates to about 450,000 Pennsylvania seniors and other eligible residents. This was a historic number of rebates to be distributed in early July.

Even better - for the first time the maximum rebate increased to $1000!

This improvement to the state’s popular Property Tax Rent Rebate Program is the result of a measure I was proud to steer through the legislature last year. It not only increased the max payment from $650 to $1000, but also increased the income eligibility limits for both renters and homeowners to $45,000.

The Property Tax Rent Rebate program hadn’t been updated in nearly 20 years, so these changes were long overdue. Now more seniors than ever qualify, and bigger rebates mean more money in their pockets. In fact, more than an additional 20,000 Philadelphia seniors qualify for a rebate this year because of the changes in income eligibility.

If you think you are eligible (or know someone who may be) and haven’t applied yet, it isn’t too late.

The deadline is December 31, but there is no need to wait, rebate payments will continue to be sent throughout the rest of the year as applications are approved.

If you are:

  • A senior 65 or older,
  • A widowed person 50 or older, or
  • A people with a disability 18 or older
  • And have an annual household income of $45,000 or less , you may qualify.

These rebates, which are paid for using funding from the Pennsylvania Lottery and gaming revenues, can go a long way to helping you purchase a medical device that your insurance doesn’t cover or pay your energy bill or make an unexpected repair to your car. It’s your money to spend how you want.
