Schweyer: Legislation introduced to protect public transportation workers (with video)

HARRISBURG, Feb. 2 – State Rep. Peter Schweyer, D-Lehigh, announced today that his first piece of legislation has been introduced.

House Bill 279 would stiffen penalties for aggravated assaults against public transportation company employees, such as those who work for LANTA. The bill would add this category of employees to the list of victims for which the alleged assailants are subject to an enhanced offense of a first- or second-degree felony.

“Protecting these employees is top priority not only for their safety, but for the safety of the general public,” Schweyer said. “I would like to thank my colleagues who co-sponsored this important piece of legislation.”

Schweyer said it was estimated that five LANTA drivers were assaulted over the last four years in his district.
