Burns honors Cambria County man with memorial bridge

Carrolltown man was killed in Vietnam

EBENSBURG, March 10 – Named after a Carrolltown man who lost his life while serving his country in Vietnam, the state Route 1002 bridge over U.S. 219 in Cambria Township was recently renamed the “Pfc. Cyril T. Yeckley Memorial Bridge” thanks to legislation sponsored by Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria.

“Pfc. Yeckley was a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his nation,” Burns said. “We salute PFc. Yeckley and the thousands of other young men who sacrificed their own lives in support of others, and we memorialize their service by naming these bridges in their honor. I considered it a privilege to sponsor this legislation honoring Pfc. Yeckley.”

Born on Oct. 20, 1945 in Carrolltown, Yeckley enlisted with the U.S. Marines and began a tour of duty as a rifleman with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam in February 1969. Less than one month later, Yeckley was killed in action on March 13, 1969.

The legislation that renamed the state Route 1002 bridge in his honor – Act 102, was signed into law in November 2019.
