HARRISBURG, April 2– On Monday, state Rep. Joe Hohenstein, D-Phila., and state Sen. Amanda Cappelletti, D Delaware/Montgomery, joined members of transgender advocacy groups to rally for Trans Day of Visibility.
Trans Day of Visibility is an observance held on March 31 every year. This day is dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination they face worldwide.
At this rally, the lawmakers highlighted a package of legislation that would protect and support Pennsylvania trans residents and trans students in their schools. This legislation includes:
Hohenstein, is the parent of a trans/nonbinary child and emphasized the importance of protecting trans kids.
“Trans people are human; however, they are too often attacked for being different and not fitting into our society’s rigid gender structures,” Hohenstein said. “Because of this, many trans individuals live in fear of being attacked or harmed simply for being their true selves. This is particularly an issue for trans youth, and as the parent of a trans/nonbinary child, I’ve seen firsthand how bullying and harassment can harm trans kids. Let it be known that we are here today to commit to pushing these important pieces of legislation that will protect our trans youth from harassment and bullying.”
"Transgender people have the right to live freely and safely – and that includes having legal documents that reflect their authentic selves,” said Cappelletti. “I'm proud to work with my Democratic colleagues in the Senate, Senators Katie Muth, Tim Kearney, and Lindsey Williams, on the Name Change Reform Legislative package which is aimed at removing barriers transgender individuals, gender non-confirming individuals, and members of the LGBTQ community face when changing their name in the Commonwealth. We will keep up the fight for these bills and other policies that uplift and support the trans community across Pennsylvania."
Hohenstein and Cappelletti were joined by members of transgender advocacy groups from across the state.
