House Democratic Leaders blast social media troll for comparing Black lawmakers to rioters attacking the U.S. Capitol

HARRISBURG, July 19 – House Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton, D-Phila/Delaware, Whip Jordan Harris, D-Phila, and Legislative Black Caucus Chair Donna Bullock, D-Phila., issued the following statement today after an elected official trolled social media for attention by comparing Black lawmakers to the insurrectionists who invaded the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“This pathetic ‘clickbait’ from an elected official who still repeats the lies that led to the January 6 insurrection, led to the death of a police officer, and could have led to more deaths in the name of overturning the results of a legal election is beyond embarrassing to this member, his caucus and the entire institution.

“We won’t play into this member’s desire for attention by demanding he apologize, but instead encourage his colleagues and leaders to remind him to heed the words of his own speaker of the PA House when he thinks about the day members of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus peacefully protested on the floor of the House of Representatives. Then-Speaker Mike Turzai called the protest ‘an act of peaceful civil disobedience,’ which led to serious debate and substantial law enforcement reforms, vital for anyone – including House members – who have dealings with the police.

“Comparing this peaceful protest with the deadly assault on the nation’s Capitol reveals this official’s ignorance in far sharper focus than anything we could add.”
