Otten announces $1.3 million in water and sewer grants for three communities

UPPER UWCHLAN, Aug. 21 – State Rep. Danielle Friel-Otten, D-Chester, today announced that $1.3 million in grants has been awarded to three communities throughout her legislative district to help upgrade water and sewer infrastructure projects.

The funding will be distributed through two grant programs by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Details of grant recipients and projects are follows:

H2O PA grants:

  • Upper Uwchlan Township Municipal Authority: $463,996 to extend the township’s sanitary sewer system to properties that currently have failing on-site septic tanks.
     
  • Borough of Phoenixville: $650,000 to upgrade the borough’s wastewater treatment plant to include hydrothermal carbonization, a process that converts organic matter to a carbon-rich, coal-like product called hydrochar.

PA Small Water and Sewer grant:

  • West Brandywine Township Municipal Authority: $254,316 to renovate four pump stations at Culbertson Run, Swinehart and Reeceville Roads.

“These grants will help to address the waste management needs of our communities and ensure that current and future needs are met without further burdening taxpayers,” Otten said. “Additionally, these projects will benefit our environment as they seek to reduce energy consumption, and, in Phoenixville’s case, decrease waste sent to landfills by using biosolids and food waste to create marketable end products. Securing this funding is a major investment into the sustainability and efficiency of our community.”
