Deasy bill on veterans’ benefits posting approved by House committee

HARRISBURG, March 25 – Legislation authored by state Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, that would require employers to display information on veterans’ benefits and services passed the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee today.

“This bill is a no-brainer,” Deasy said. “The information we want veterans to see is important to them for all sorts of reasons like access to vet programs on health care, mental health treatment, tax benefits, eligibility for benefits under the state and federal government, just to name a few. They’ve earned the right to have access to all of this and we simply want to make sure they see it.”

Deasy said the legislation (H.B. 799) would require employers with more than 50 full-time employees to display a poster that would be created by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and made available by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. The poster would include:

  • Contact and website information for the PA Department of Military & Veterans Affairs.
  • Substance abuse and mental health treatment.
  • Educational, workforce and training resources.
  • Tax benefits.
  • Pennsylvania veteran driver’s license and non-driver identification card designation.
  • Eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits under state and/or federal law.
  • Legal services.
  • Contact information for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Crisis Line.

Deasy added that employers would be required to display this posting in an area that is accessible to all employees.

The bill now heads to the full House for consideration.
