Shaler Street Bridge closing; Check out my digital newsletter!

The long-term closure of the Shaler Street Bridge over Route 19 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) in Pittsburgh begins today.

The bridge will be closed for eight weeks. Demolition work requiring the closure of Route 19 between the West End Circle and I-376 will occur according to the following schedule:

  • Inbound (northbound) Route 19 will close to traffic at noon on Saturday continuously through 6 a.m. Monday.
  • Outbound (southbound) Route 19 will close to traffic at approximately midnight on Saturday continuously through 6 a.m. Monday.
  • Closures will occur in both directions Monday through Friday night, Sept. 9-13 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Closures will not occur in both directions simultaneously.

New bridge spans are anticipated to be moved into place using a self-propelled modular transporter the weekend of Oct. 18. Work will continue for approximately two weeks before the new structure is reopened.

During the weekend closure, Route 19 will be shifted into the newly constructed northbound lanes to accommodate reconstruction of the southbound lanes. PennDOT said southbound traffic will be crossed over into the northbound lane just south of the Steuben Street on-ramp and crossed back over onto the southbound side just north of the Shaler Street Bridge.

The new traffic pattern will be implemented Monday at 6 a.m.
