Dawkins: CubeSmart receives state grant for converting to solar energy

PHILADELPHIA, March 19 – State Rep. Jason Dawkins, D-Phila., said he is proud to announce that CubeSmart will receive a $91,711 grant for the construction of a roof-mounted solar array at its Mayfair Street location.

“I’m glad to see the state encouraging development in the clean energy sector,” Dawkins said. “By harnessing energy from natural renewable sources, we will not only create good-paying jobs, but also cutback our dependence on more environmentally harmful sources such as oil and coal.”

CubeSmart is a self-storage facility designed to offer affordable and accessible storage space to residential and commercial customers. The solar array will provide 90 percent of the existing energy consumption at its facility and will generate 125,653 kilowatt-hours per year.

The funding, provided by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, will go toward the purchase of equipment. The total project cost is $247,867. CubeSmart will provide matching funds.

The state’s Commonwealth Financing Authority is an independent arm of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development charged with identifying and supporting projects to improve the quality of life and financial health in communities around the state.
