Cruz celebrates Three Kings' Day with area children

HARRISBURG, Jan. 9 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., joined area children at the Norris Square Children's Center on Jan. 5 to celebrate Three Kings' Day. "This is a festive holiday marked with music, food and fun. It's a day to celebrate traditions and culture and I'm happy to have hosted local festivities," Cruz said. During the event, Cruz joined those portraying the three kings, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar, to distribute hundreds of gifts to children who attended the event. "I could find no better way to celebrate the 12 th Day of Christmas than to think of children in need," Cruz said. "Some of these children may not have received any gifts during the holidays, so to close out the season by seeing so many smiling faces is truly humbling." Read more


Cruz sworn in to ninth term as state representative

HARRISBURG, Jan. 4 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., began his ninth term as state representative of the 180th Legislative District at a swearing-in ceremony held at the state Capitol Tuesday. “Representing the people of my district in Harrisburg has been, and continues to be, one of the biggest honors of my life,” Cruz said. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives swearing-in corresponds with the first Tuesday in January, every two years. This year is Pennsylvania’s 201st legislative session. Cruz said his legislative interests include job creation, criminal justice reform and public safety and health issues. He said he will continue to support legislation aimed at reducing the number of minors exposed to lead in the commonwealth. Read more


Cruz applauds new center promoting arts & culture in the Latino community

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 14 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., said he is proud to have assisted in obtaining funding for the construction and opening of a new facility to further promote Latino culture in Philadelphia. Taller Puertorriqueno Inc. was founded in 1974 as a community-based cultural organization whose primary purpose is to preserve, develop and promote Puerto Rican arts and culture. The organization celebrated the grand opening of its new home on Dec. 7. Cruz said he was honored to work with Dr. Carmen Febo, executor director and CEO of Taller Puertorriqueno, to acquire two separate grants of $2.5 million each to go toward the construction of the new building. "The work that Taller Puertorriqueno does to promote Latino culture throughout our city is invaluable in enriching our personal experiences and the experiences of all Philadelphians," Cruz said. "I look forward to what the future holds in the city for this organization and the Latino community as a whole." Cruz noted that Taller is the largest Latino arts organization in Pennsylvania. Cruz calls on Pennsylvania Department of Health to implement Hannah’s Law

State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., Democratic chairman of the House Human Services Committee, today called on the Pennsylvania Department of Health to stop holding up the implementation of Act 148 of 2014, also known as Hannah’s Law, and begin screening newborns for the lysosomal storage disorders as called for under the law. "This law was passed by the House, passed by the Senate, and signed by the governor," Cruz said. "There is no question that the Department of Health must begin implementing this law and stop dragging their feet when it comes to the health of our newborns." Read more

Get the lead out: Mandatory testing of children is a no-brainer

The discovery of elevated levels of lead in Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority lines underscores the need to make sure it isn’t in our children, too. The Legislature is considering a bill that would mandate lead testing for expectant mothers and for 1- and 2-year-olds, with high-risk children getting annual checks through age 6. If lawmakers don’t pass the bill, sponsored by Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Philadelphia, the Allegheny County Health Department could move forward on its own and implement the testing of children here. But the Legislature should pass Mr. Cruz’s testing bill — and related legislation — so children statewide are protected. Read more

Property Tax/Rent Rebate forms available at my office

Forms for Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program for the 2015 tax year are available at my district office – and my staff is ready to help you file yours for free ! The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and people with disabilities 18 or older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters. Half of Social Security income is excluded and the maximum standard rebate is $650. Claimants must reapply for rebates every year because they are based on annual income and property taxes or rent paid each year. Spouses, personal representatives or estates may file rebate claims on behalf of deceased claimants who lived at least one day in 2015 and meet all other eligibility criteria. The oft-extended deadline to apply for a rebate on property taxes or rent paid in 2015 is June 30, 2016, and the rebates normally are distributed by the Deparment of Revenue beginning July 1. So, the sooner you file, the sooner you will receive your money. Read more


Lead testing package to be introduced in Pennsylvania House

Citing the growing concern both nationwide and in Pennsylvania about the dangers of hidden lead poisoning, state Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., will introduce a package of legislation aimed at increasing lead testing in several main areas. "It’s a tragedy that the events in Flint had to remind us of the dangers of lead poisoning, but the danger is real and the danger is high," Cruz said. "Studies from the Department of Health show that multiple cities across Pennsylvania are dealing with children testing positive for high blood lead levels, including Allentown, Scranton, York, Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, among others. This is not an issue we can afford to take lightly." Read more
