Cruz to discuss REAL ID extension, next steps at Friday news conference
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 24 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., today announced he will host a news conference later this week to discuss Pennsylvania’s REAL ID noncompliance issue and the extension recently granted to the state by the Department of Homeland Security.
The news conference will start at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at Cruz’s District Office, 3503 N. B St., Unit 7.
Last week, Pennsylvania received a limited extension through June 6 to update driver’s licenses to meet requirements under the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.
At the news conference, Cruz intends to discuss steps the General Assembly still must take to comply with the enhanced security standards. Without action, Pennsylvanians could be denied access to federal facilities and eventually even airline travel.
Specifically, the limited extension only allows Pennsylvanians continued access to semi-secure federal buildings, nuclear power plants and military bases through June 7. Unless further action is taken or another extension is granted, Pennsylvanians will need federally approved ID for air travel beginning Jan. 22, 2018.
Media coverage is invited.
