Rep. Angel Cruz September 23, 2019 | 10:31 AM
HARRISBURG, Sept. 20 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., Democratic chairman of the House Human Services Committee, announced he will participate in a newborn screening awareness rally Tuesday at the Capitol.
The rally will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 in the East Wing Rotunda.
Cruz said the event is part of an awareness campaign, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Newborn Screening Technical Advisory Board and family advocates, to bring awareness to the importance of Pennsylvania’s Newborn Screening and Follow-up Program.
Cruz will discuss his resolution, H.R. 475, recognizing September 2019 as "Newborn Screening Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
“Early detection allows for early intervention to ensure all babies have a chance to live healthy lives,” he said. “It’s vital that we raise awareness of the importance of these screenings.”
In addition to the resolution, Cruz' legislation to provide early detection of treatable disorders in newborns (H.B. 730 and H.B. 1220) was approved unanimously by the Human Services Committee last week.
