STATE COLLEGE, Aug. 6 – Smoother, safer traffic flow is coming to State College Borough and Ferguson Township thanks to nearly $1.72 million in grant funding from PennDOT, state Rep. Scott Conklin announced today.
Conklin, D-Centre, said the funding awarded under the Green Light-Go Program will allow the borough and township to make needed upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety while also reducing air pollution.
“With the new funding, State College can ensure the borough has the latest signal communication and timing technology to keep traffic flowing smoothly, maximize safety and reduce the idling and stop-and-go driving that increases harmful vehicle emissions,” Conklin said. “The funding will also allow Ferguson Township to modernize signal equipment at a busy intersection to reduce collisions and ensure motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists stay as safe as possible.
“I want to thank PennDOT and our local partners for helping to bring this funding home.”
Conklin said the funding includes:
- $1.46 million to State College Borough for upgrading the borough’s existing signal network communication system.
- $258,590 to Ferguson Township to modernize traffic signal equipment at the intersection of North Atherton Street & Blue Course Dr./Clinton Avenue.
In addition to the District 77 improvements, Conklin said other county funding includes $463,100 to College Township and $268,200 to Benner Township for multiple traffic signal upgrades.
Green Light-Go is a reimbursement grant program, and applicants are required to provide a 20% local match. Grants may be used for operational improvements such as light emitting diode (LED) technology installation, traffic signal retiming, developing special-event plans and monitoring traffic signals, as well as upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies.
