Comitta, Sappey recognize West Chester University athletes with citations
WEST CHESTER, Jan. 23 — State Reps. Carolyn Comitta and Christina Sappey presented West Chester University’s women’s field hockey and rugby teams with a citation honoring their national championship titles today.
During the title-winning field hockey game, the Golden Rams beat the Saint Anselm College Hawks 2-1 on Nov. 24, 2019. Marre Corver and Katie Thompson scored goals early in the game, and goalkeeper Claire Nielsen made three saves. This victory is the school's seventh national title in school history and third at the Division II level.
The rugby game, a 15-14 victory against Brown University, was the Golden Rams’ first time ever winning the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Tier II National Championship title. While the Golden Rams were down for the first half, Corinne Gallagher scored the team’s first try with assistance from Lauren Madalian. Senior co-captain Haley Spangler then scored the second try followed by Autumn Czaplicki who made the game-winning try. This was Czaplicki’s 13th try of the season, which placed her in the program’s Top 10 history by scoring 25 tries in only two seasons.
“We are immensely proud of these extraordinary college athletes and the extreme effort they put forth to win these impressive titles,” Comitta said. “I was honored to present them with official citations from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. They are so deserving of this special recognition.”
“These athletes show us what we can accomplish by effectively working together and maintaining strong, passionate dedication,” Sappey said. “Their achievements are inspiring, and the community is very proud of them for earning these national championship titles.”
