MEDIA ADVISORY

Barbin to address rally to turn back proposed veterans' services cuts

HARRISBURG, July 2 – State Rep. Bryan Barbin, D-Cambria, will address a rally of veterans at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, in Soldier's and Sailor's Grove across from the East Wing of the Capitol.

Media coverage is invited.

The rally is part of a day-long initiative by veterans and supporters to visit their state legislators and urge them to restore the proposed $25 million in cuts to veterans' services, including veterans nursing care and the Scotland School for Veterans' Children, in the Senate-passed version (S.B. 850) of the 2009-10 state budget.

Additional speakers will include:

·         Frank Frame, former Scotland School superintendent and current member of the Scotland School Foundation;

·         Frank Mills, Pennsylvania department commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Barbin has introduced legislation (H.B. 1713) that would prohibit the closure or sale of the Scotland School or any other veterans' facility unless findings justifying the action have been reviewed by the Senate and House Veterans Affairs committees at least one year prior to any transaction.

Founded in 1895 near Chambersburg, the Scotland School for Veterans' Children currently educates 231 students in grades 3 through 12.

Many Scotland graduates go on to enlist in the Pennsylvania National Guard or Reserves, and the majority of them go on to enroll in two- or four-year colleges.
