Mundy urges PPL to rethink Susquehanna-Roseland power line
HARRISBURG, June 20 – Concerned about the proposed Susquehanna-Roseland power line slated to run through parts of her legislative district, state Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Luzerne, is calling on the president and CEO of PPL to carefully examine the impact that construction would have on municipalities faced with continual flooding.
Two of the three proposed routes of the power line – A and B – would run through Mundy's district in Courtdale and West Wyoming, as well as Exeter, Jackson, and Kingston townships. She said that since 2006, those municipalities have been subjected to frequent flooding, and that the installation of new structures or the reconfiguration of existing ones could exacerbate flooding below those areas.
"Land use is of critical importance to the residents in these areas," Mundy said. "My fear is that the construction of the power lines could increase the effects of storm water runoff in the areas below the mountainside."
Mundy said the Back Mountain region already has endured dangerous flood levels and that any construction could have serious consequences for residents. The lawmaker is working continuously with local municipalities, watershed groups, and the Department of Environmental Protection and the Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority in an effort to mitigate future flooding.
"We are working hard and making significant progress in addressing the needs of residents and determining what can be done in flood prevention," Mundy said. "I believe that any substantive alteration of the landscape, aside from flood mitigation measures, could stunt that progress, or, worse yet, cause additional problems."
